Ummm... I think the answer is that your friends are taklng up all the bandwith of the connection. Can you go on the internet whilst you have the server on?

If you can't then it's possible that the 'server' is taking up all the download width of your connection. If you can then it's possible that the server is taking up all the upload width of your connection.

So everyone connects to the machine via your internet IP, and you try to connect via the machine's local IP, right?  Most consumer routers cannot handle you trying to connect to your public/internet IP from an internal connection.

I assume you have port forwarding set up properly if people can connect remotely.

how do you tell if it is

what is "add +net_port xxxx into parameters on both machines.. a diff port number for each one where xxxx is the port num."

That's for multiple people connecting to an internet server from the same local network.  It doesn't sound like that's the problem.  You didn't answer my first question, though.  When you try to connect to the (local) server, are you using your local IP, or the one you're giving to all the internet people?

I'm really surprised that the internet people are able to connect if port forwarding isn't configured (and if you didn't tell him to, it isn't).  You may have a different-than-typical home setup (in fact, it really really sounds like you do with the landlord owning a router for the whole place), so my advice may not work.. but it's worth a shot.

1. when i set the server up on comp 1 I gave the server the name IoN test server.
2 They ran et and looked in the list of servers for that name and found it and connected to it ok
3 When i run et on other computer the server does not show in list of servers
4 When they look up server info in menu they saw the ip and gave that to me.
5 When I try to connecte to ip I keep geting waiting to connect to server.

Ok, you need to use the local IP.  Find out the IP of the machine that's running the ET server (on your local network).  It most likely starts with 192.168.something, but could also be 10.something or 172.something.  You cannot use your Internet IP (what other people on the internet see it as).

I will try that the next time I set the server up but can you tell me how to find out the comps local ip is.
I know there is a command that you enter at the dos prompt but cant remember what it is.
